The weather is finally turning here—my garden has bloomed and every day my cat tries to slip out the back door so he can trample through the wildflowers and roll on the cement.
Something has shifted—maybe I’ve finally shaken off the grad school blues—and I’m reading again. I read What My Bones Know by Stephanie Foo and So You’ve Been Publically Shamed by Jon Ronson this month. Now I’m working my way through Violence: Reflections on a National Epidemic by James Gilligan. I couldn’t put down What My Bones Know—it’s informative, honest, and hopeful. So You’ve Been Publically Shamed was, despite the subject matter, a fun read. Violence frames violence as a public health problem rather than a moral failing. All three books rotate around shame, trauma, and community in different ways. Next on my list is Thirty by Marie Darsigny, translated by Natalia Hero. I ordered it from Metranon Press and I’ve been checking my mailbox every day.
Gap-Toothed Women (1987). It’s charming and was clearly someone’s passion project. Not to be one of those people, but I feel like I don’t see documentaries or films like this anymore.
And lastly, memes:
Thank you for reading.
